Glen Cromwell appears to be living the American Dream. From his small hometown tucked among the forests of northern Minnesota, he builds a life defined by ambition, education, and success. College leads to law school, and an increasingly impressive career takes him from city to city and state to state. With each move, Glen adds another accomplishment to his résumé, increases his personal fortune, and moves further from the modest beginnings of his youth.
Professionally, Glen seems to have everything a man could want.
Personally, his life tells a very different story.
Despite his success, Glen has been remarkably unlucky in love. Each of his marriages has ended tragically, and each loss has come under very different circumstances. After enduring heartbreak more than once, Glen eventually accepts that perhaps companionship simply isn't meant for him. He has his career, his money, and the comfortable life he has worked so hard to create. He convinces himself that those things will have to be enough.
Then he meets Wendy Donnelly.
Beautiful, charming, and sophisticated, Wendy captures Glen's attention in a way no woman has in years. What begins as a friendship slowly develops into something neither of them can easily ignore. Their relationship unfolds against the polished backdrop of country-club life-tennis matches, rounds of golf, dancing, and seemingly innocent time spent together. Beneath the surface, however, their feelings continue to deepen.
For Glen, Wendy represents something he thought he had lost forever: the possibility of finding a true partner and finally having the lasting love that has always eluded him.
There is only one problem.
Wendy is married.
Her husband, Barry, is wealthy and controlling, and an ironclad prenuptial agreement has made the prospect of divorce financially devastating for Wendy. Walking away from her marriage would mean walking away from the life and security she has known. As Glen and Wendy grow closer, the obstacle standing between them begins to seem increasingly impossible to overcome.
Unless Wendy becomes a widow.
What may have once seemed unthinkable gradually becomes a possibility Glen can no longer dismiss. He has spent his life carefully building his future, making calculated decisions, and pursuing what he wants. Now the one thing he wants most is something money, education, and professional success cannot give him.
Wendy.
Glen becomes convinced that if they are ever going to have the life they want together, Barry cannot remain part of it. But wanting someone gone and making that happen are two very different things.
As desire gives way to obsession, Glen faces the most consequential decision of his life. How far is he willing to go for the woman he believes is his one true love? Can a man accustomed to carefully controlling his future devise a way to remove the one person standing between him and happiness? And if he crosses that line, can he ever go back?
Glen knows what he wants.
He knows who stands in his way.
Now he must decide how-and when-to make Wendy a widow.
