Freedom is one of the most frequently used words in the human language and, at the same time, one of the least understood. We all speak of it. We all believe we know it. We invoke it when we make decisions, when we defend our convictions, or when we imagine a different future. Yet rarely do we pause to ask what it truly means to be free. Perhaps because freedom is not found where we usually seek it. It is not found in the cities built by our hands. It does not appear along paths traced by others. It does not dwell in certain answers or perfectly marked routes. Freedom appears when our points of reference disappear. When we find ourselves alone. When we leave behind what protects us. When the world becomes immense once more.
Hermes was the guide of paths. The companion of travellers. The guardian of visible and invisible roads. Through him we came to understand that every existence is a journey and that every human being seeks a destination they rarely manage to fully comprehend. Yet there is another path. One that does not lead to a particular place. One that seeks not to answer where we are going, but who we are when we stand completely alone before the world. That is the path of Artemis. Most of us have felt that sensation at some point in our lives. We find it in the heart of a forest. On an unfamiliar mountain. Along a forgotten trail where silence seems to reign over everything else. We stop for a moment and look around. The trees are older than we are. The earth has been there for thousands of years. The wind continues its course without the slightest concern for our presence. Everything is greater than ourselves. And for a few brief seconds we understand the true scale of our existence. We are small. Very small. So small that the world would continue much the same had we never existed at all. That realisation ought to frighten us. And yet something curious happens. In spite of our uncertainty, we continue walking among the trees. We search for a new path, a new clearing, a new landscape. A new way of seeing the horizon. No one guides us. No one guarantees that we will find what we seek. And still we continue.
It is precisely then that freedom appears. Not the freedom to impose our will. Not the freedom to control the world. The other kind. The genuine kind. The freedom that is born when we accept our smallness and choose, nevertheless, to keep moving forward. It is in those moments that Artemis walks beside us. Not as a distant goddess, but as a silent guide. As the voice encouraging us to trust. As the presence that reminds us that nature is not our enemy. As the companion who watches over those who learn to respect what is greater than themselves. For freedom has a price. And that price is respect. Respect for the forest. Respect for life. Respect for the world that existed long before our arrival.
Those who seek to dominate nature ultimately find themselves struggling against it. Those who learn to respect it discover that they were never truly alone. That they have always been part of that balance. That the forest is not foreign territory. That the mountains are not obstacles. That the world is not a threat. It is a home. And when that understanding arrives, the reward appears of its own accord. It is not conquest. It is not victory. It is not power. It is something far simpler. And far more valuable. It is affection. The quiet affection of places that eventually come to recognise us. The confidence that emerges when we no longer feel like visitors. Then we understand that the goal was never to reach the end of the path. The goal was to become one more being beneath the sky. One more life within the immense web of existence that surrounds and sustains us. For perhaps freedom consists in finding our place within the world. And because true courage is standing alone before the world with very few resources and a great deal of determination.
