Daniel Walker was raised in Wyoming by a father who believed that a man's character was measured not by what he claimed to believe, but by the choices he made when those beliefs were tested.

At thirteen, Daniel received a leather notebook from his father, James. What began as a place to record thoughts and experiences gradually became something more important: a means of examining his decisions, questioning his motives, and confronting uncomfortable truths about himself.

As Daniel grew into adulthood, he carried those lessons into his marriage to Emily, his relationship with their daughter Abigail, and his responsibilities to his family and community. He became a respected man who believed deeply in justice, personal accountability, and protecting those who could not protect themselves.

But those convictions would eventually lead him toward the greatest mistake of his life.

Confronted by the suffering of children who had been sexually abused, Daniel became increasingly frustrated with a justice system he believed was failing to protect them. His desire to see justice done slowly hardened into the conviction that he had a responsibility to act.

He sought answers through prayer, conversations, and the principles his father had taught him. Yet as his frustration grew, Daniel gradually stopped questioning whether he was right and began searching for reasons to justify what he already wanted to do.

Eventually, Daniel made a deliberate choice to kill the man he believed responsible.

His actions destroyed the life he had built.

Arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death, Daniel was separated from his family and forced to confront the contradiction between the values he had spent his life defending and the terrible decision he had made.

Inside prison, Daniel returned to his father's notebook. Through years of reflection, difficult relationships, and painful honesty, he began to recognize that even the strongest conviction does not give a person unlimited authority over another's life.

His friendship with fellow prisoner Eli Mercer challenged him to continue examining his motives rather than simply replacing one form of certainty with another.

Meanwhile, an extraordinary new correctional program was taking shape.

Known as the Den, the program offered twelve condemned prisoners an opportunity to pursue freedom through an unprecedented survival experience. Behind its imposing boundaries waited dangerous animals, limited resources, and eleven other participants whose identities and intentions would remain unknown until the program began.

Participation was voluntary. Survival was not guaranteed.

When Daniel was offered a place, he faced another decision that could change everything.

The possibility of returning to Emily, Abigail, and the life he had lost was almost irresistible. Yet he understood that entering the Den could mean his death-and that surviving it would not necessarily make him worthy of freedom.

After carefully examining the rules, considering the dangers, and confronting his own reasons for wanting to participate, Daniel made his choice.

He signed the agreement.

In twenty-one days, he would enter the Den.

And this time, he would have to live with whatever followed.
