When high-spirited Dolores first shows interest in a sign for a cat that needs a home, her older and wiser sister Faye remarks, "But animals run away from you Dolores."
Dolores will not be deterred. "Now you are my cat," she declares, when they bring Duncan home in his carrier, "and you will come out and play with me." Duncan hides. Soon Dolores can't understand why the portly, timid animal will neither play dress-up, nor fetch a ball at her command. And Dolores is especially bothered that Duncan not only runs away at the sight of her, but prefers the quiet company of sensible sister, Faye. First, Dolores tries approaching Duncan directly: "How come you always play with Faye and never play with me!" she hollers. Then, hurt and jealous, Dolores announces that Duncan is not worthy of her attention and she will ignore him altogether, and we see a series of pictures where she does just that. Sure enough, as any cat lover knows, nothing seems to attract a cat more than a cat avoider. And Duncan is no exception. Soon he is seeking out the company of Dolores in many endearing little ways which continue to build until he pays her the ultimate feline compliment of resting his chin on her neck at bedtime. Dolores expresses her exuberant delight at her new friendship with Duncan, by proclaiming, DUNCAN REALLY LIKES ME! only to cause the cat to hide once again. Uh-oh!
