Generated Fears

A machine wrote twenty horror stories. We are not going to tell you which ones work.

A bar closes at two in the morning. A man walks in at 2:01 and orders a beer. The next night, the same man, at 2:01. The bartender stops locking the door.

A school recital. Every child on stage plays the same piece. Every parent in the audience is watching. None of them are watching their child.

A woman moves into an apartment where the last tenant left everything behind, arranged exactly as if she still lived there. The landlord insists nothing has been touched in years.

A house where every clock is stopped at 4:17.

A storage unit whose lock is replaced every morning.

A woman hears her downstairs neighbors arguing every night, in her own voice and her husband's. She lives alone.

These are the constraints. Not plots. Constraints. A machine was given each one and asked to write a horror story. No outline. No edits. No human hand on the sentences. Every word in this book was generated, and what you are holding is the raw output, selected for the anthology but not rewritten.

That is the experiment. It is also the fun.

Read the stories straight and see if they get you. Then read them again and watch the machine behind the page. Notice the words it reaches for. Notice the way it ends a story. Notice the moments where it cannot help but explain a thing it was told not to explain, and the moments where it manages not to. By the fifth story you will be reading two books at once: the horror story on the page, and the machine trying to be a horror writer.

Some of these stories are genuinely frightening. A few of them fail in ways that are more interesting than success. One or two do something no human writer would do, and we cannot fully explain why. We are not going to tell you which is which. You will have to find out for yourself.

This is not a stunt and it is not a warning about artificial intelligence. It is an anthology of twenty horror stories written under the most interesting constraint in the world right now, which is that a machine wrote them and does not know what it made.

You know what you are holding. That puts you ahead of the author.

Inside this book:

Twenty complete horror stories, each written under a single hard constraint

Voices and subgenres that range from domestic uncanny to folk horror to literary meta horror to plain old-fashioned dread

Full disclosure: the contents are AI generated, the selection and presentation are human

No tricks, no hidden co-author, no ghostwriter. A machine wrote every word.
