It was a very rainy October day. Because there was static on the car radio, our banker neighbour Aunt Şayegan had pulled over beside the Altınbalık Restaurant on the waterfront to listen to the noon news. When I asked her, "What does it mean to break a pen?" I got no answer. That evening, my father explained that, because three death sentences had been handed down that day, the judges broke their pens after signing the execution orders so that they would never make such a decision again. But I was not convinced. I remember thinking that if they had broken their pens beforehand, they would not have had to sign any death sentences at all.
