From boardroom headlines to classroom arguments, artificial intelligence is reshaping how we work, learn, and live. Yet the conversation stays trapped between two sales pitches: marketing that promises magic, and alarm that predicts the end of human work. Both are selling something, even if it is only attention.
Is AI for You? asks a plainer question, sector by sector and job by job: where has this technology actually been deployed, what measurably happened, and what did it cost?
Sometimes the answer is remarkable. A community health worker in rural Uganda can now screen a child for pneumonia at the bedside in under an hour, instead of waiting two weeks for a lab result from a distant city.
Sometimes it is not. A world-class cancer center spent $62 million on an advisory system that never treated a patient. A sepsis-prediction tool running in hundreds of hospitals missed two-thirds of the cases it was installed to catch. Twenty-six thousand families were wrongly accused of fraud by a government algorithm, and some of them lost their children.
Both kinds of story are in this book. A book that told you only the first kind would be an advertisement.
Every chapter but the last ends with What this means for you - two or three things you could genuinely do this week, and one thing worth refusing.
The record of AI forecasting is dismal in both directions, so this book does not add to it. Instead it works through three futures in full - the technology stalling, arriving slowly across decades, or arriving fast - and then hands you the signposts to work out which one you are actually living in.
Figures throughout are sourced to peer-reviewed studies, official reports, and court records, with vendor-supplied numbers marked as such. Claims that could not be verified were cut rather than softened.
So: is AI for you? For some of what you do, yes, and the gains are real enough to reorganize your week around. For some of it, no - and the confident promise that it can is how people get hurt. This book will not hand you a verdict. It will teach you to reach one yourself.
