This book presents Dewey s work as a claim to the human potentials found in experience, the imagination and the possibilities that must always emerge from a disposition towards liberty. Dewey s contribution is placed at a juncture between the idea of education as such a disposition and the various forms that education takes through forms of compulsory, post-compulsory, adult, life-long, vocational and workplace learning. By bringing together these forms onto a shared horizon, Dewey s work is presented as a pedagogy of disposition that catalyzes the idea of liberty. Here the idea of freedom is extended to a series of educational, aesthetic and political acts that are never passively assumed, but actively sought through the myriad meanings that we give to everyday living. Going deeper into Dewey s work, one finds that such meanings are neither ubiquitous nor arcane. Rather they demand from us that we actively recognize in our experiences a sense of anticipation, imagination and determination to ascertain that our deeds and thoughts remain open to ever-changing potentials.
