Long division is not a mystery. It is fair sharing, done one place value at a time - and once a child sees why the steps work, they can rebuild them any time they forget.
Long Division Rescue is a picture-led workbook for children ages 9-11 (Grades 4-5) who are learning long division or getting stuck on it. Instead of handing over a list of steps to memorize, it builds understanding slowly: first with base-ten blocks a child can picture, then with "big bites" (partial quotients) and the area model, and only then with the written steps.
START WITH A MAP, NOT A TEST
A short "Where Am I Stuck?" check opens the book, with a simple table that shows which units your child can move through quickly and which need every page.
ONE IDEA PER LESSON, SMALL STEPS
Each of the 24 lessons fits on two pages:
- Learn It: Digit the harbor seal explains one idea, then solves one example in small steps, with a picture for every step.
- Practice & Check: practice on squared work grids that keep every digit in its column, then Quick Check questions that test understanding, not just answers, plus Challenge Star problems.
About 15 minutes a day, one lesson a day, finishes the book in about five weeks.
WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN
- Unit 1: Division facts, remainders, dividing tens and hundreds, and estimating first
- Unit 2: Sharing with base-ten blocks - tens and ones, trading a ten, sharing hundreds
- Unit 3: Big bites (partial quotients), remainders with bites, and the area model
- Unit 4: The four long division steps - Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down - with three-digit numbers, plus checking with multiplication
- Unit 5: Zeros in the answer, remainders, what a remainder means in a word problem, and remainders as fractions
- Unit 6: Dividing by 10, 20, 30, estimating with two-digit divisors, long division with two-digit divisors, and word problems
MISTAKES ARE PART OF THE STORY
The Great Harbor Regatta is coming to Seabright Bay, and Grandpa Tomas needs help sharing out supplies. Rafi is quick but sometimes skips a step, so every unit ends with a Fix the Mistake puzzle where your child finds and corrects his error. These target the slips children make most: forgetting a zero in the answer, letting digits drift out of line, and leaving a remainder that is too big.
ALSO INSIDE
- A Division Toolkit page with the four steps, three golden rules and a multiples helper
- 6 Game Time pages: a remainder dice game, code-breaker jokes, a snack-stand puzzle, an answer-detective challenge and division wheels
- A Math Without Stress page for grown-ups, with no timed drills anywhere in the book
- My Harbor Map to color after every lesson
- A 20-question Final Test, a Certificate of Rescue and a times table chart
- A complete answer key for every activity
Perfect for parents, homeschoolers, tutors and classroom teachers, and a natural next step after Times Tables Rescue (Book 1). Buyers may photocopy pages for the children in their own home or classroom.
