Matrices are indispensable aids in restorative dentistry, serving as temporary walls that support restorative materials during placement and setting while helping to reproduce the natural anatomy, proximal contact, contour, and marginal integrity of teeth. The successful restoration of proximal lesions depends not only on the restorative material used but also on the appropriate selection and proper application of matrix systems and wedges. An ideal matrix facilitates accurate reconstruction of tooth morphology, prevents gingival overhangs, minimizes food impaction, preserves periodontal health, and contributes significantly to the longevity and clinical success of restorations. This dissertation reviewed the historical evolution of matrix systems, beginning with the earliest concepts of proximal caries management and progressing to the development of modern matrix techniques. The various components of matrix systems, including matrix bands, retainers, and wedges, along with their ideal requirements, functions, and objectives, were comprehensively discussed.
