A contemporary philosopher explores the essence of nature and humanity among the glaciers. With an afterword by Anne-Marie Garat, winner of the Prix Femina.
When glaciers groan deep in the polar regions, and icebergs calve with a thunderous roar - like whales giving birth - vast masses of ice roll in the sea, nurturing or extinguishing countless lives. People paddle kayaks, dive into the icy waters, and listen to the voices of Indigenous peoples.
Philosopher Olivier Remaud refuses to see icebergs as "lifeless geological objects." Instead, by weaving together insights from natural science, anthropology, and philosophy, he endows them with the qualities of living beings. Icebergs are not only "keystone species" in the polar ecosystem; they are silent witnesses to human civilization and, above all, philosophical vessels for rethinking the relationship between humanity and nature. To think like an iceberg is to reexamine humanity's place within the Earth's community.
What can teach us humility are often those beings older and more silent than ourselves. When an iceberg turns in the mist, and the submerged ridges beneath the water surface reveal themselves, it is time to look at wild life with fresh eyes - to set aside the arrogance of anthropocentrism and try to see the invisible.
In this age of solitude, this is where the work of reconnecting with the world begins.
