A teenage boy tries to run into the street to be arrested alongside his father. His mother, with no other option left, hides his clothes. That single desperate act may have saved the life of the man who would go on to build Christianity's first systematic theology.

Origen of Alexandria was born into a small, largely uneducated religious movement founded by a carpenter and a handful of fishermen. By the time he died, he had produced the first critical edition of the Bible, the first systematic Christian theology, and a body of writing so vast that even the fragments which survive still shape how scholars read scripture today. He studied philosophy under the same teacher as the man who would found Neoplatonism. He built a curriculum that carried students from basic grammar through the full sweep of Greek philosophy before ever letting them near the deeper meanings of scripture. And he did all of it while carrying, from his adolescence onward, an unresolved longing for the martyrdom that had claimed his own father and that would only catch up with him, in a slower and crueler form, at the very end of his life.

This book traces Origen's complete story using two in-depth lecture transcripts as its foundation, from the cosmopolitan city of Alexandria that made his achievement possible, through his rise as a teenage teacher and his bitter falling out with the bishop of his own church, to the theological innovations that would influence Christian thought for well over a thousand years. It follows him into direct intellectual combat with one of antiquity's most formidable critics of Christianity, and into a Roman prison cell where torture, not execution, became the instrument of his eventual death. And it follows his legacy afterward, into the quiet, unacknowledged influence he had on Augustine of Hippo, and into the formal condemnation that would brand him a heretic three centuries after he died.

Readers curious about the intellectual foundations of Christian theology will find here the story of the man who built them, working with tools no Christian before him had thought to use in quite the same way. Readers drawn to early church history will encounter Alexandria at the height of its influence, a city of philosophers, scholars, and Jewish scholarship as sophisticated as anything the ancient Mediterranean produced. And readers interested simply in a complicated, driven, and deeply human historical figure will find in Origen someone who never resolved his own contradictions so much as spent an entire life working through them, in scholarship, in teaching, and finally in the manner of his own death.

Origen's story does not offer simple conclusions. It offers something more valuable: a genuine encounter with a mind willing to think as rigorously about faith as anyone in the ancient world thought about anything, and a chance to understand why that willingness cost him so much, both in his own lifetime and in the centuries of judgment that followed.

Begin the journey into the life of Christianity's first true theologian, a man whose ideas outlived every attempt to erase them.
