For many years early childhood education and care has been looked upon as work for women. As history tells us, women around the world have been central in this line of work. Many might say that because this is looked up on as a profession for women, it has affected the status and role that the profession has in today's societies. And all thought there is no doubt that the area of ECEC has undergone tremendous changes the past decades, there are still many challenges ahead, and one of them is the professionalism of preschool teachers. In the light of a Swedish context this book investigates the role of professionalism in regard to education and competence in being or becoming a preschool teacher. Further, how the development of a professional preschool teacher role is affected by how it is perceived by its society and the emerging influential factors that this have, such as salary, environment, child/adult ratio and work description. This research is a supplement to support former and future research in this matter.
