When the System descends, every survivor is given a class built to fight, build, or endure. Elias Venn, a maintenance technician who only ever wanted to finish the job and get home, receives the one class nobody wants: Rank Zero: Burdened. His Strength is a three. His combat record is a wrench and a habit of leaving a site safer than he found it. While stronger survivors run to claim territory, Elias is left behind with the wounded, the slow, and the people no ranking wants.

There is no cheat code in this System. Every gain costs pain, and everything he carries is taken out of him in return. But Elias is discovering what the rankings never printed: Rank Zero was never built to win through strength. It was built to grow where nothing else can. Endure the impossible. Carry what others drop. Solve the problem no class was designed for. And then do it again.

Now the city is a battlefield, a ragged settlement depends on him, and the Ascendant Coalition wants to erase anyone who proves the System's rankings can be challenged. The first regional trial is coming, and something far stronger than the city's monsters is moving toward them.

The System gave Elias nothing. He intends to make nothing the beginning.
