Rediscovering Hope

Nine years after the lights went out, the Kilgore family finally had peace. A valley. A wall that held. Four thousand people who slept through the night.

Then the fires appeared on the western ridge.

They came in a line, kindled where everyone could see them, and by morning Kathy Kilgore was gone and every defense Jeffrey ever built was pointed the wrong way. The wall faced east. The men came from the west.

Now Jeffrey and his three children are running for a place they know only from trader stories. Hope. Forty miles west at the three rocks. A settlement that takes people in and asks one question at the gate. Not who are you. What can you do.

But a second story comes out of the deep west in the same breath as the first, and no one can explain how the two are related. A man called the Shepherd. He comes to your house and he is kind. He does not threaten you. He writes your names in a book, and he counts your children.

The road there runs through burn and deadfall and country nobody maps. What waits at the end of it is not the sanctuary Kathy died believing in, and Jeffrey Kilgore is about to learn that the thing he spent nine years building was never the wall.
