Retire in Belize

The Only English-Speaking Retirement Haven in Central America - And Most North Americans Have Never Considered It

While everyone is talking about Costa Rica and Panama, savvy retirees are quietly discovering Belize: the Caribbean's best-kept secret for Americans and Canadians who want ocean views, zero tax on foreign income, and freehold property ownership - without ever learning Spanish.

Retire in Belize is the definitive, no-nonsense guide to the Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program and the four destinations where North American expats have built thriving communities: San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), Caye Caulker, Placencia, and Hopkins. Every dollar figure, legal requirement, and contact in this book has been cross-referenced against current 2026 Belizean law and verified expat reporting.

• English is the official language - government, law, medicine, and real estate, all in English

• Zero tax on foreign income - pensions, Social Security, 401(k), RRSP withdrawals, investment income: all tax-free in Belize

• The QRP Program - anyone over 40 with $2,000/month income qualifies for permanent residency, duty-free import of household goods, and a vehicle every five years

• Freehold property ownership - no foreign ownership restrictions, no lease structures, no corporate workarounds

• 3 hours from Miami or Houston - close enough for medical emergencies, far enough to feel like paradise

• An honest head-to-head comparison: Belize vs. Panama vs. Costa Rica

• Realistic monthly budgets: $2,500-$3,500 for a comfortable North American lifestyle

• The 30-day scouting trip - how to test your destination before committing

• Step-by-step QRP application guide with full checklist

• Real estate: how to buy safely, what to avoid, where values are heading

• Healthcare reality check - what Belize can and cannot handle

• Banking, currency, FBAR/FATCA (for Americans) and CRA obligations (for Canadians)

• Tax implications for both US and Canadian citizens - what Uncle Sam and the CRA still want

• Real retiree profiles and verified contacts

This guide doesn't sell you a fantasy. Hurricane season, healthcare gaps, island infrastructure, and bureaucratic realities are covered honestly - because the best retirement decision is an informed one.

Written by an expat who lived and worked in San Pedro from 2014 to 2021, navigated the permanent residency process firsthand, and knows Belize not as a tourist, but as a resident.

If you're a Canadian tired of brutal winters or an American priced out of coastal living, Belize deserves a serious look. This book is your starting point.
