Sustainable and Smart City Logistics – Innovations, Challenges, and Future Directions

Sustainable and Smart City Logistics explores the rapidly evolving field of urban logistics and the challenges and opportunities associated with managing the movement of goods, services, and information in increasingly complex cities. Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the book integrates insights from logistics and supply chain management, urban planning, sustainability, digital technologies, and operations management to examine innovative approaches for building resilient, efficient, and sustainable urban freight systems.

The chapters explore key developments in city logistics, including:

• the application of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, digital twins, geospatial technologies, and data analytics to enhance urban freight planning, real-time visibility, and operational efficiency
• emerging last-mile delivery solutions, including autonomous delivery vehicles, drones, parcel lockers, and crowd-sourced logistics platforms for rapidly expanding e-commerce ecosystems
• sustainable and low-carbon logistics strategies, including fleet electrification, circular economy practices, carbon reduction initiatives, and environmentally responsible urban freight operations
• integrated planning approaches that connect freight and passenger mobility through smart transportation networks, multimodal logistics hubs, and shared urban infrastructure
• International case studies highlighting innovative practices, policy frameworks, governance models, and practical solutions from both developed and emerging economies.

Bridging theory with practice, Sustainable and Smart City Logistics provides researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and postgraduate students with evidence-based insights and practical frameworks for designing the next generation of sustainable, resilient, and intelligent urban logistics systems.
