Everybody knows the story. Rome fell. Hairy men with axes came out of the forest, burned the libraries, smashed the aqueducts, and Europe spent the next thousand years in the dark waiting for somebody to invent the Renaissance.
Almost none of that is true, and the parts that are true happened for reasons nobody teaches you.
The Germanic tribes did not conquer the Roman Empire. They acquired it. They took jobs in it, drew salaries from it, married into it, swore oaths to it, and were paid enormous sums of imperial gold specifically not to attack it. When the payments stopped, they took payment in land instead, which is what any unpaid contractor does if the contractor happens to command twenty thousand cavalry. Then they kept the Latin, kept the tax rolls, kept the bishops, kept the emperor's face on the coins, and quietly changed the name on the door.
This book tells that story as what it was: the most audacious acquisition in the history of the world, carried out over three centuries by people who mostly wanted a steady income, a decent title, and the right to be buried somewhere warm. There are sackings in here, and battles, and at least one king who ate his own reputation. There is also a great deal of paperwork, because the paperwork is where the empire actually changed hands.
You will meet Alaric, who sacked Rome because his promotion was denied. Theoderic, who ruled Italy better than the last several emperors and never stopped apologizing for it. The Vandals, who took Africa, took the grain supply, took the actual fatal bite out of the western economy, and got remembered for a word invented thirteen centuries later by a furious French bishop. And Odoacer, who in 476 ended the Western Roman Empire by sending its crown to Constantinople with a note that amounted to: you keep this, we are fine.
Nobody rioted. Nobody wrote an obituary. The rent was still due on Tuesday.
A history of the end of Rome for people who suspect they were told a cartoon version and would like the receipts.
