The machine did not malfunction.
At least, that is what every record says.
When Detective Rafael Cormier is called to the home of Nadine Vukelic, her death looks like an accident involving the humanoid assistant she relied on every day. The unit's diagnostics are clean. Its movements fall within approved limits. There is no sign of intrusion, sabotage, or violence.
But the room tells a different story.
Cormier turns to Tessa Qiu, a Carnegie Mellon robotics researcher who studies how autonomous machines make decisions at the edge of uncertainty. Together they uncover other incidents: a misplaced cart, a mistimed movement, an injury blamed on human error, a machine that did exactly what it was allowed to do and still produced the wrong result.
The pattern leads beyond one death and one manufacturer toward a question no one thought to ask while humanoid robots were becoming indispensable:
What if the machines were never meant to attack America?
What if America simply put them everywhere they would need to be?
