For thirty years Kamakshi has strung jasmine into garlands at the foot of the four hundred and thirty seven stone steps leading up to Tiruchirappalli's ancient Rockfort temple, in the exact spot where her husband collapsed and died three hundred and ninety steps above her, eleven years ago. She has not climbed those steps since. When a letter arrives announcing that her estranged son Vikram is finally coming home after twelve years of near silence, and a city notice threatens to clear her flower stall from the temple road entirely, the quiet grief she has organized her whole life around begins, gently and then not so gently, to come apart. Vikram's homecoming forces both mother and son to face the argument that sent him away and the guilt neither of them has ever spoken aloud. At the same time, a barefoot orphan named Meena, still haunted by the flood that took her family, finds her way to Kamakshi's stall and, almost without either of them deciding it, into her home. Kamakshi must choose between the same careful silence that has kept her safe for a decade, and the far riskier work of living an unguarded life again. As a corrupt city official moves to demolish the market street's flower stalls under cover of a religious festival, Kamakshi finds herself leading thirty one families who have sold flowers beneath the temple for generations. She must stand against a man used to being obeyed, mend a relationship with a son she has not fully forgiven or been forgiven by, and find the courage to climb the four hundred and thirty seven steps she has avoided since the day they took her husband. Each of these battles turns out to depend on the others, and losing any one of them threatens to cost her everything she has left. The Rockfort Vow is a novel about the steps grief convinces us we can no longer climb, and about what it costs, and what it gives back, when someone finally climbs them again. It is a story about mothers and the sons who leave, about debts of love left unspoken for too long, and about a community's quiet insistence that ordinary people's lives are worth defending. Readers who love stories of family, faith, and quiet courage set against real and vivid places will find in Kamakshi's journey a reminder that the hardest climbs are rarely the ones that break us, only the ones we have not yet finished.
