What remains when the people, places and moments that shaped us are gone?
The Space Between is a collection about memory - the memories we carry, the memories we inherit, and the memories that refuse to disappear.
From childhood streets and family homes to first love, separation, grief and ageing, these poems move through the spaces between parents and children, lovers and strangers, past and present, life and death. Some are intimate and reflective; others confront mental darkness, violence, war and the ways people can hurt one another.
Yet this is not simply a book about loss.
Again and again, ordinary things become vessels for what has gone: a rocking chair, a seashell, an old letter, a perfume bottle, a piece of sea glass, a blackbird crossing the sky. The poems ask what happens to the people and places we have loved when they are no longer physically present - and whether remembering can become a form of keeping them alive.
Moving between tenderness, humour, darkness and quiet observation, The Space Between is ultimately a book about paying attention.
Because sometimes what remains is not what we expected.
Sometimes it is simply what we noticed, what we loved, and what we chose not to forget.
