Is there an identifiable background to Paulżs description of the divine Spirit as "life-giving"? Is there any particular significance to this way of describing the Spirit? John W. Yates surveys the relevant literature of Ancient Judaism and argues that there is a background to this description, found in the tradition of the "breath of life", that originates out of Gen. 2:7. He contends that Paul builds on this tradition in his description of the "life-giving" Spirit, and in doing so portrays the Spirit as the divine agent who brings about new creation through resurrection of the dead.
