A healthy mind in a healthy body. Everyone knows the phrase. Almost no one
notices that we kept only its middle, and lost the last part of it - not the
caring, we have never been more obsessed with the body, but the using.
We took the physical work out of living. We handed the carrying, the climbing,
the digging, and the walking to machines and to other people, one convenience
at a time - and then, aware that something was missing, we paid to put a
smaller, stranger version of it back in a room and called it exercise.
On Mount Athos there is no gym and no word for exercise. There is a peninsula
of steep paths, gardens, and workshops, and a community of monks whose bodies
are used all day, not as a discipline they chose but because the day requires
it. This book asks a single question and holds it for its whole length: what
did we lose when the body stopped working, and how much of it could an ordinary
person take back?
It examines what the monks keep, what the modern world discarded, and what the
evidence actually says about the difference - including a full chapter on the
largest recent study finding that hard physical work can harm as easily as it
heals, because an honest book about the body has to give the strongest
counter-argument its due.
This is not a fitness book. It makes no promises about your body or your mind.
One chapter is devoted to what nobody has established. It offers, in the end,
one small and durable idea: take back a single piece of the work you gave away.
The third and final book of the trilogy that began with The 180 Days: The Mount
Athos Way of Eating and continued with The Half We Cannot Measure. Reading the
first two is not required.
