Thresholds - Roads to Rome

For thirty years the gospel had been walking, and it had never once walked in a straight line. It began in an upper room in Jerusalem, where frightened men waited for a promise they did not fully understand. It crossed into Samaria, into the house of a Roman centurion, into the synagogues and marketplaces of Asia Minor and Greece. It survived Stephen's stoning, Saul's rage turned to Paul's mission, riots in Ephesus, a beating in Philippi that ended in a jailer's midnight baptism. By every human measure, it should have been stopped a dozen times over. Instead, it kept moving, carried by ordinary people who happened to be standing where God chose to act.
Now the road bends toward Jerusalem again, and every voice along the way is telling Paul not to go.
He knows the danger. Prophets in Tyre and Caesarea have already warned him, some in words, one by wrapping Paul's own belt around his hands and feet to show what waits for him in the city. His friends begged him to turn back. Paul will not. He has carried this gospel too far, through too many closed doors, to stop now because the next door looks like a cell.
What follows in these pages is not the story anyone would have chosen to write. A riot in the temple courts. A mob ready to kill a man for a rumor. A hurried rescue by Roman soldiers who cannot tell if they have saved a citizen or arrested a criminal. Years of hearings before governors who want a bribe more than a verdict, in a system built to protect Rome's peace, not to seek anyone's justice. An appeal to Caesar that no one expected, spoken by a prisoner with nothing left to lose and no one left to trust but the emperor he has never met.
And then the sea. A storm that swallows a ship whole. Two weeks adrift with no sun, no stars, and no reasonable hope of surviving the night. A shipwreck on an island most of the men aboard had never heard of, followed by a viper, a fever, and a strange kind of welcome from strangers who had every reason to fear them instead.
Through all of it, one sentence keeps surfacing, spoken first in a Jerusalem barracks by a voice Paul alone could hear: you must also testify in Rome. Not despite the chains. Through them.
This is the last of the five thresholds. It is the hardest one to cross, because it does not open onto a new city or a new community the way the others did. It opens onto a Roman house arrest, a soldier chained to a prisoner's wrist day and night, two years of waiting inside four rented walls. And yet from that small room, with that guard beside him, Paul will write letters that outlast every empire that ever tried to silence him. The gospel that could not be stopped by a chain will not stop riots, storms, or courtrooms either.
The witnesses in this volume did not choose their roles. A Roman commander trying to keep a riot from becoming a massacre. A soldier's nephew who overhears a plot he cannot unhear. A shipowner who trusts his own judgment over a prisoner's warning and pays for it. A ship's doctor who watches a man he has come to love be bitten by a snake and refuse to die. Each of them stood, for a moment, at the edge of something larger than themselves, and had to decide what to do with what they had seen.
The road to Rome was never going to be safe. It was only going to be necessary.
This is that road.
