Transmission of Light (Denkoroku in Japanese) is a collection of traditional teaching stories or koans about fifty-three Buddhist patriarchs of India, China, and Japan. The stories describe the enlightenment experiences of each great master, including the Buddha, Nagarjuna, Bodhidharma, Hongren, Shitou, and Dogen. Transmission of Light is an early classic of the Soto school of Japanese Zen and is attributed to the thirteenth-century Zen Master Keizan (1268 -- 1325). Along with The Blue Cliff Record and The Gateless Barrier, it is one of the three essential collections of koans studied by Zen students. An informative introduction by Thomas Cleary explores the context of the work and its central themes.
