Atlanta, around 1920. Georgia Rooks Dwelle, a Black woman physician in Jim
Crow Atlanta, opens a two-bed infirmary in rented rooms on Boulevard -- and
keeps it open for twenty-nine years.
With two mismatched beds, a room she measured to the inch, and a door she
forgot to measure, Georgia builds a practice out of promises: what she can
honestly offer her patients, her staff, her donors, and the girl she
delivered -- and what she cannot. Through the Depression, the war years,
and the long arithmetic of rent, wages, and care, the infirmary holds
because its agreements hold: negotiated, strained, broken, and honorably
revised.
Based on the real Dr. Georgia Rooks Dwelle and the Dwelle Infirmary. The
patients and community in this story are invented.
