Urthborn's Academy recruits gifted youths to an Institute that treats power as extractable property, binding cadets through engineered "heartbonds" and guardians through corrupted covenants. Ember Rose-an Echoist whose gift threatens to expose the Institute's lies-survives escalating cruelty, discovers her family's legacy of forbidden covenant knowledge, and helps free the true guardians while racing to prevent the Institute and the awakening floor-god below from harvesting everyone the way it harvested her mother.

Ember begins in near-despair and imminent capture, chooses surrender on her own terms, and then repeatedly falls into deeper traps-multiple "containment/capture" spirals where bonds and teammates are fractured or destroyed-before surging back through hard-won liberation. The arc fits a double man-in-a-hole because the story drops sharply into institutional cruelty and personal loss, rises through covenant restoration and allies gaining agency, drops again when the Academy's "honor week" trap collapses into open sacrifice and tactical murder, and finally rises again into a moving escape and rebuilding mission.
