We See You

It recorded the end of every world it found.
It never thought to ask if they were watching back.

For as long as it has existed, the Archivist has drifted to the edges of dying worlds. It records how each civilization ends, then moves on. It does not intervene, it does not alter outcomes, and it has always believed no one knew it was there.

It was wrong.

The last people it recorded left it a single instruction: find out why. So the Archivist goes back through its own records and finds itself in them:

• A people who starved themselves making offerings to the "Patient Eye."
• A world that fired on it for forty-one years.
• A civilization that staged its own ending as a performance for it.
• Children who were the only ones who could see it, and the adults who hooded them so they couldn't.
• Fourteen million letters, written over nine centuries, that it never answered.

Every record it reopens asks the same question: did being watched change how they died?
