In the near future, three volunteers spend their mornings in the Mojave, using ground-penetrating radar and quiet, patient machines to find the people the desert has swallowed. Jackie, Steve and Barry have made an uneasy peace with the work: the heat, the unmarked graves, the gallows humour that gets them from the truck to the flag and back again.
Then, three metres beneath the body of a girl missing since 1978, the radar finds something that should not be there. A made corner. A built edge. A dark band running under the sand for kilometres in every direction - recorded on no map, claimed by no one.
They were never meant to go looking for what lies deeper than the dead. What the Desert Keeps is a tense, humane story about three ordinary people, the technology that lets us finally read the silence of the deep ground - and the question of whether we are ready for what it has to say.
