Windows of Light is a vibrant collection of memoir, essays, poetry, fiction, and family histories from the writers of Nikkei Write Now!, a community dedicated to preserving and sharing Nikkei stories. Nikkei, translated from Japanese, means "of Japanese lineage."
Written by a Japanese Canadian, Japanese Americans, and a long-time ally and friend of the community, these deeply personal works span experiences in both Canada and the United States. Together, they explore identity, family, heritage, resilience, and belonging through stories shaped by immigration, wartime incarceration, military service, cultural traditions, activism, and the everyday moments that connect us across generations.
Rich in perspective and voice, this anthology reflects the diversity of the Nikkei experience while illuminating universal themes of memory, love, loss, and community. Some stories uncover long-hidden family histories; others celebrate the strength found in friendship, creativity, and cultural connection.
Like light shining through many windows, each contribution offers a unique view into a shared tapestry of experience. Together, these stories honor the past, enrich the present, and affirm the enduring power of storytelling to preserve history, foster understanding, and inspire future generations.
