Cet ouvrage, pensé par le Musée Couty de Lyon, rassemble la transcription des principales conférences données par Jean Couty au cours du XXe siècle. Il s’agit d’un témoignage exception- nel mettant en lumière le regard affûté du peintre sur l’Histoire de l’Art, du XIIe siècle à la cité moderne. Mais son étude est bien plus large encore, puisque l’artiste lyonnais se penche égale- ment sur la sculpture et l’architecture, et réalise de merveilleux parallèles avec la littérature en citant par exemple Rainer Maria Rilke ou encore Paul Valéry.
Il parvient ainsi à mettre en symbiose les dualités auxquelles les artistes se confrontent : instinct et réflexion, tradition et mo- dernité, ombre et couleur... Le processus créatif est mis en lu- mière, pour plonger dans l’esprit de l’artiste, au plus près de ses sensations, lesquelles sont toujours le point de départ de toute composition.
Cet ouvrage dense apporte de la sorte une réflexion profonde sur l’essence de la création artistique, de Rembrandt à Tony Garnier, en passant par Courbet, Matisse et Picasso, pertinemment élaborée par un peintre qui symbolise lui-même les apports d’un riche XXe siècle dans l’Art.
