Adi Latinceye Alkhorizmi, Fransizcaya Algorithme, Ingilizceye ise Augrim seklinde gecmistir. 780 senesinde Harezmde dogdugu kabul edilir.Harezmi, ilk defa birinci ve ikinci dereceden denklemleri analitik metotlarla, bir bilinmeyenli denklemleri de cebirsel ve geometrik metotlarla cözmenin kurallarini ve usullerini tespit etti. Matematikte ilk defa sifir rakamini kullandi. Cebir ilmini, metodik ve sistematik olarak, ilk defa kendisi ortaya koydu. Harezmiye gelinceye kadar cebir adi altinda olmamakla beraber, cebire ait bircok mevzular yer almistir.Harezmi, bunlari yeni usul ve kesifleri ile sistematik bir duruma getirerek cebir ismi altinda toplayip asagidaki kare ve dikdörtgenden ibaret misalde aciklanan geometrik ispat yolunu kullandi. Harezmi, matematik ilminin yaninda astronomi ve cografya ilimlerinde de söz sahibiydi. O, yeryüzünün yapisini inceleyerek, kendi bulusu olan bilgileri ortaya koydu. O zamanlar bilinen sehir, dag, nehir ve adalari inceledi. Harezmi, 850 senesinde Bagdatta vefat etti. Üc oglu olup, hepsi de Matematik ilmi üzerinde ciddi calismalariyla taninir.
