Pastel Painting Techniques

Discover the techniques that bring pastel paintings to life.

Pastel Painting Techniques: The Artist's Guide to Texture and Creative Effects is a practical, beginner-friendly guide that helps artists understand not just what pastel techniques are, but also when, why, and how to use them effectively.

Pastels are among the most immediate and expressive art mediums available. With no brushes to clean and no paint to mix, colour can be applied directly to the surface, allowing artists to work with remarkable freedom and spontaneity. Yet the true power of pastel lies in the techniques used to control texture, light, atmosphere, depth, and detail.

Inside this comprehensive handbook, you'll explore a wide range of essential pastel techniques, including:

•Blending

•Layering

•Hatching and cross-hatching

•Scumbling

•Glazing

•Stippling

•Sgraffito

•Blocking in

•Feathering

•Side strokes

•Dry washes

•Shading

•And many more

Each technique is explained in clear, accessible language, with practical guidance on where it works best, common mistakes to avoid, and tips for achieving stronger results.

You'll also learn how these techniques can be applied to real painting subjects, including:

•Landscapes

•Trees and foliage

Rather than treating techniques as isolated exercises, this book shows how they work together to create convincing, expressive artwork. Whether you prefer soft realism, impressionistic landscapes, or vibrant contemporary pastel paintings, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how different marks and applications influence the finished result.

Filled with examples, artist tips, practical advice, and full-colour illustrations, Pastel Painting Techniques serves as both a learning resource and an ongoing studio reference.
