Ailesi ve memleketinden uzakta, Avrupada sürgün hayati yasadi, yalnizligin acilarini cekti. Ertaylan, Sultan Cemi hazirlarken zengin bir arsiv taramasi yaparak Batili ve Dogulu kaynaklari bir arada kullanmistir. Tarihsel gercekligi nesnel bicimde ortaya sunabilmek icin salt tarih degil edebiyata da basvurmus, Sehzade hakkinda yazilan beyitleri de toplamistir. Sultan Cem elbette öncelikle bir Osmanli sehzadesinin trajik hayatini anlatmaktadir. Ama bu calismayi sadece bir biyografi olarak algilamak, onun kapsam ve icerigini son derece dar bir alana sikistirmak olur. Sultan Cem, merkezine Cemi alan bir dönem calismasi olarak düsünülmelidir. Türk toplumunun 15. yüzyildaki hayati, bu hayati bicimlendiren sosyal, siyasal, kültürel etkenler de göz önüne serilmektedir. Saray hayati, sehzadelerin yetistirilmesi, devlet ve saltanat anlayisi, bu anlayisin topluma bakisi yer almaktadir.
