Dort eckt er nicht nur wegen seiner bunten Hawaii-Hemden, sondern auch mit seinen seltsamen Ansichten und unkonventionellen Heilmethoden an. Denn für Patch Adams steht der Mensch im Mittelpunkt. Und so bringt er krebskranke Kinder mit roter Clownsnase zum Lachen und schafft es auf seine ganz besondere Art, selbst todgeweihten Patienten neuen Lebensmut einzuhauchen. Während er so einerseits das Herz der schönen Studentin Carin (Monica Potter) gewinnt, treibt er andererseits die bornierte Hochschul-Verwaltung an den Rand des Wahnsinns. Als Patch dann auch noch heimlich sein eigenes Krankenhaus gründen möchte, schießt er eindeutig über das Ziel hinaus. Zur Strafe soll er vom Studium ausgeschlossen werden ...
